The Mysore Orientalist
There are about 56 Oriental Research Institutes in India. Many of them are publishing Oriental Journals, which are throwing light on various aspects of the research that is going on in the field of Sanskrit and alight subjects. In 1960s the Oriental Research Institute, Mysore also decided to publish such a Research Journal to encourage the scholars of Karnataka to contribute to this journal and does to throw light on new subjects and the journal was named “The Mysore Orientalist” and the first issue came out in 1968 under the editorship of Dr. G.Marulasiddhaiah, the then Director of the institute. This encouraged the scholars of the institute to write articles both in English and Sanskrit to enlighten the people about the progress that was achieved in the research in this field. One great benefit was that even the scholars from outside Karnataka they also started contributing articles to this journal. And therefore, this journal was exchanged with the research journals of various institutions. And thus, the name of the University of Mysore as well as the Oriental Research Institute, Mysore became well known all over the country and even outside.
The special feature of this institute was many short unpublished works available in the manuscripts of this institute were published in this journal. Ṣatkārakavivarna of Ratnapāni, and many other works came to light through the Oriental Research Institute. So, this was a fillip to the scholars of the institute to search for short works in Sanskrit to edit them and published them with the necessary notes and commentaries through this journal.
But in about 65 years from the start only 16 volumes of this journal have been published so far. The regularity has not been kept up and therefore the institute now wants to revive this Research Journal to encourage the scholars of the institute to go deeper into the subjects and to become experts in presenting the advances in research to the world. This will also help the institute in obtaining various journals published from the different parts of the country. So that we can be up to date in understanding what research work has taken place in the different parts of the country. This journal will also contain some Oriental Series where the short works available in the institute can be published. And so, this is an absolute need for publishing this journal and this will be taken up urgently for the benefit of the institute.
